The "official" (Bentley) Service Manual says to drain or extract the oil from the engine, so using an extractor is a VW approved method of changing the oil. That said, an underside inspection is still a good idea. Have Fun! Don P.S. The $55.00 from Dieselgeek includes shipping. _____
So I'm coming up on another oil change and I'm contemplating the idea of an oil extractor. I've got a PD, so it really can't hurt to change the oil more often than I currently do (I currently just change at the recommended interval).

I think this is a great idea considering it uses vacume pressure to extract oil. Not for the full drain though. I'd use the drain plug, empty it out, THEN use this little tool. I bet it'd suck .1-.2 quarts of oil out after your typical drain. That doesn't sound like much, but It'd bring peace of mind knowing I got ALL of the old oil out.

the oil fill on most (domestic) cars goes onto the surface of a cylinder head, for the oil to drain through return galleries to the pan. some cars do have a direct to pan filler, or at least to a spot lower on the block. you typically aren't going to get a tube down a little oil gallery. so don't expect to win with that strategy.
A lot of people on tdiclub used these for oil changes. Basically TDI's are too low to change the oil on, without jacking up the car/putting it on ramps. It was pretty much a 50-50 split on whether they were a good idea or not. Many of the people who used them swore they could get more oil out with the pump then by draining it.
I have read that people have used the extraction method and checked to see if there was any in the oil pan by removing the plug, and none came out. It's not that important to get every last drop anyway. Make sure your oil is hot however you do it. My extractor has a volume gauge, so I can see how much I get out.
recommend a good oil extractor - Tron : As good an idea as the pumps are - I still much so prefere the old method of dropping it through the sump drain plug, Yes I know and I fully empathise that this is difficult as said by others but to me, this way, also 'cleans the engine debris' from the area it is designed to be collected and cleaned from - the sump.
Aug 15, 2014 · It’s too early to know if a plastic oil pan is a good idea or not, but let’s shelf that for now. When I posted the picture, it brought up a good point.
